This is a MUST DO!! Hike is roughly 3 miles round trip, I always enjoy an adventure / hike with a reward at the end, Skunk Harbor not only has this throughout but pays off at the end. Everything was brought in by boat, during the Roaring Twenties ~ WOW!! Upon your arrival to the beach be sure to find the historical remants of an old railroad ramp used to supply timber to Virginia City after the Comstock Lode plus an abandoned stone house along the waters edge with historical markers from the 1920s that belonged to the wealthy family of George Newhall built as a summer house here for vacations and parties. Throughout your hike down to Skunk Harbor take in the breathtaking picture worthy views all around. When you reach the fork in the road you have 2 choices: left fork leads to Prey Meadows which is blanketed with many varieties of wildflowers in the spring anddd right fork leads you to Skunk Harbor. Travel along the old dirt road on the other side of the green gate through the Tahoe forest. After you park, grab your gear (keep in mind there are NO facilities - take out what you take in). Parking is FREE but limited, located at a turnoff along HWY 28 about a few miles north of the Spooner/HWY 50 junction - look for an old green pipe gate which is also the entrance to the trailhead (do NOT park in front of gate, you WILL be fined). This spot on Tahoe has ahhhmazing breathtaking views, dog friendly beach access for everyone and is truly a hike to a hidden gem that you won't soon forget!! Skunk Harbor not only combines all of these wonderful attributes but also throws in a bit of history for you to check out too!

I’ve never seen them before and watching them interact was so funny and adorable. Last but definitely not least, the prairie dogs!! They’re not even reptiles but I really love the fact that they included them. The gift shop was very reasonably priced! I ended up getting 7 souvenirs for my family back home and it only ended up costing 45$ with military discount ! The dome shaped building is where the bulk of the reptiles are, it looked small at first, but the layout of the building allows for it to be full of SO much content and things to look at!! It seems like they put a lot of effort into keeping the viewer engaged and possibly become more knowledgeable about the animals. Only fear and Sauron’s tortures made Smeagol say something close to the truth. His constant telling of lies became one of his main qualities, which he wouldn’t part with throughout the story. Possessing the Ring, it corrupted him in such a way that Smeagol even became an outsider and, hating the sun and its warmth ever more, took refuge in a cave under the Misty Mountains. But he never aimed to be first at anything, “his head and his eyes were downward”. Smeagol came from a big and well-off family, where grandmother, strict and faithful to old customs, was a matriarch. However he called the Ring his birthday present and said it came from his grandmother, who had lots of beautiful things of that kind. The Ring, possessed much greater powers and influences over the two hobbits, unlike any common copper or tungsten rings would. But the ring perniciously worked on the hobbit’s consciousness and Smeagol even strangled his friend in order to get the Ring. No one suspected its destructive force at that time. Once Smeagol with his friend Deagol went fishing and they fished the One Ring out of the Anduin. His actual name was Smeagol, a translation of his Westron name, which means “burrow-deep”. Before the Ring came into his possession, Gollum was a hobbit of the tribe of the Stoors, who lived near the Gladden Fields. Gollum’s life can be divided into several periods, although gathered information is not that reliable. Such noises could express practically anything: excitement and delight, sadness and fury, and other feelings. He got his nickname from a clicking sound he made from time to time with his throat which sounded like “gollum”. Gollum is the most mysterious and contradictory character in the fantasy adventure “The Lord of the Rings”.
